Music scene: R&G - Rhythm and Grime
In London R&G – Rhythm and Grime; the mixture of soul, hip hop, dancehall and garage is the emerging British new musical form. But what is it? Well, the rhythm comes from the drum and the bass. But grime as the name doesn’t suggest is actually a progressive music as supposed to one that denotes negativity. It is a dynamic form of rap specific to the UK. Scene luminaries include Wiley, Dizzee Rascal and current boy wonder Kano. However, Mike Skinner’s The Streets does occupy an honorary status among most fans of UK grime.
So, how important is R&G? Well, to put the emergent genre into perspective it’s as important to the vitality of the urban music scene as Jazzie B’s Soul II Soul collective was to soul music in the late ‘80s. Pioneered by such seminal club brands such as Twice as Nice at London ’s Colosseum, the sound emerged in the mid-late ‘90s under a variety of different names and guises. Peculiarly, no one knew what to name it but, importantly, everybody recognized what it was. Pushing an agenda that is to the core: gritty, organic, home-grown, sexy and original the scene looks set to flourish throughout 2005 and beyond.
Showcase date: September 25
